What is the problem?
It can be intimidating to enter the world of home gardening, especially when you live in an urban environment with unique space limitations. To make this hobby more accessible to people, there needs to be a frictionless way to start a home garden that is tailored to urban dwellers who have unique constraints based on the city environment they live in.
User Research
Target users
Every user has different needs, so it was important to define the key users this app would target and what they want out of adding plants to their living environment. To do that, I created some basic user personas to work with that best defined the prospective urban dwellers of the app.
How it works
Onboarding
It was important that users are able to tailor their experience based on their living conditions. During onboarding, users are asked about what their space is like (number of rooms, amount of sunlight) and what their experience level is. This allows the app to curate plant recommendations that will thrive the best in their environment and based on their overall expertise level.
Adding plants
Users are presented with the ability to add plants either through curated app suggestions based on their living situation or by shopping for plants in general.
Plant care
Plants can be treasured possessions for people, sometimes being considered as precious as a pet. Users have the ability to name their plants and the app helps users manage their plants daily needs with care notifications, recommended products and a detailed care guide.
Feedback
The feedback I received from people I tested this with was extremely positive, with many noting the convenience of having the entire experience tailored to their wants and living situation.
